### Responsibilities
Primary duties consist of processing and preparing for processing prescriptions by counting, mixing, pouring, combining, or obtaining necessary medications and pharmaceutical products. In addition, will operate, care, and maintain automated dispensing devices and equipment, as well as have knowledge of, and the ability to, perform pharmaceutical operations using aseptic techniques. Secondary duties will consist of basic supply order initiations, receiving shipments of goods, assuring compliance with storage requirements, and inventory control through perpetual analysis. Additionally, will have a basic knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and healthcare facility computer systems, as well as assist in other areas of the pharmacy if needed.
Fills Outpatient/ Inpatient prescriptions and makes accurate selection of appropriate ingredients and containers, utilizes "good manufacturing techniques". Has full knowledge of formulary items and ensures prescriptions meet all restriction, policy, and procedure requirements. Has working knowledge of stock levels, Prescription problems, such as prescription duplication, is brought to the attention of the pharmacist. Administrative Duties: The incumbent assist the supervisory staff with the daily assignments and for relocating technical support from one area of the pharmacy to another.
Monitors workflow of the prescription filling process in order to maintain an average prescription waiting time below 30 minutes by adjusting staffing assignments to meet workload demands. The incumbent ensures that the unit of use items and the automated dispensing systems are re-stocked and that preventative maintenance is performed.
Coordinates preventative maintenance which includes such functions as, determining when to order new or exchange old cassettes will include drug/cassette assigning, and "Trouble -shooting" the system as required
Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm including weekends and holidays

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
**Preferred Experience:** This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.
**Grade Determinations**:
GS-5
Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
2. Knowledge of and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
Assignments. This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision
GS-6
Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
(b) Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

**Physical Requirements:** Work is mostly performed while standing and walking. Work requires moderate lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.
